To see a world...

New Work 2010 - 2011

On my daily walks in Crystal Palace Park a lot of time is spent looking at the seasonal dramas immediately underfoot. In puddles I have seen in microcosm, or imagined I have, the very same earth shaping natural forces imagined in earlier works. These random areas of ground have served as starting points for paintings. Each painting presents both a formal and subjective challenge; the rectangle has to be ordered into a satisfactory design and the painted surface, built up slowly through staining, washing out and impasto application, manipulated into an evocative image.
As I worked through ideas based on these observations of these ambiguous small worlds, I was reminded of William Blake’s’ poem, Auguries of Innocence:

“To see a world in a grain of sand,
And a heaven in a wild flower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand,
And eternity in an hour."

In the summer, torrential rain washed large sections of the chalk paths away. The sheeting water passing over these brilliant white, shifting surfaces, created endlessly fascinating compositions. Again, in miniature, forces of nature could be seen moving and reshaping the landscapes of the paths. In some places the force of the water cut deep gullies across the path, redistributing pebbles, twigs and leaves, daily transforming the world underfoot.
