In New Zealand I heard the story of the first and fatal meeting of the Maori and Europeans in 1642. Each party thought the other was attacking. The Maori killed four seaman and they shot a Maori in return. In Maori legend the strange vessel with billowing white sails is remembered as the 'The boat with flocks of seagulls' It would be another 120 years before Captain Cook, set foot on New Zealand.
